The lesson on working memory is aligned to the mathematical topics of number and operations, as the teaching of these topics relies on diverse working memory strengths. We anticipate leveraging the equitable teaching practices of leveraging multiple mathematical competencies, drawing on multiple sources of knowledge, building mathematical fluency on a foundation of conceptual understanding in ways that are culturally relevant, and encouraging and supporting students’ efforts and persistence doing ambitious, culturally relevant mathematics as strategies to help teachers broaden their conception of students’ working memory strengths as they learn basic mathematical topics as counting, learning addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and develop mathematical practices in each of these areas.
