This lesson on cognitive flexibility is aligned to the mathematical topic of rational numbers/ fractions: a vitally important mathematical topic in upper elementary and middle grades that is essential for success. Using community and cultural funds of knowledge, this lesson will support teachers with developing an expanded conception about cognitive flexibility and its usefulness for supporting student learning about rational numbers in culturally relevant and affirming ways, such as using mathematical modeling to deepen students’ understanding and helping students make connections among representations such as fractions, decimals, and percentages.
